Japan announces first solar powered bus

As of September 1st the first solar cell-equipped bus will be open to the public of the southern Japanese city of Okayama. The bus, designed by the japanese company Sanyo, is hybrid diesel-electric with rooftop solar cells that generate 798 watts which power the interior LED lights. When in the absence of sun, the solar power stored in battery can last up to 9 hours.

Althought the hybrid Toyota Prius as well as the Blue Car also offer a model with rooftop solar panels to run the interior systems, Sanyo’s Solarve bus is the first to use this technology in mass transit.
