Google buys 20 years worth of Wind Farm Energy

Business sense + social and environmental commitment. Two of the key strategic units at the heart of MG-i. That is why it pleases us to spread the word on Google’s recently signed contract with an Iowa wind farm to purchase wind energy at a set rate for the next 20 years.
Last February the company gained access to buy and sell electricity in order to achieve its goals for carbon neutrality and more efficient energy use in its massive data centers- the Power Purchase Agreement. This past august Google started to apply this agreement by buying the Iowa wind energy at a predetermined rate.
According to a Google representative, “while we are happy to be purchasing renewable energy as part of our environmental commitment, this is also a structure that makes long term financial sense for Google,” adding that “through the long term purchase of renewable energy at a predetermined price, we’re partially protecting ourselves against future increases in power prices. This is a case where buying green makes business sense.”
